The University of Southampton is well-known nationally and internationally for its excellence and long-standing reputation for expertise and innovation in chemistry. The award-winning Chemistry department is particularly focused on the synthesis, processing and application of new materials and functional molecules. These are vital to driving future innovation and technology and improving the sustainability of our society through developments in areas such as energy, catalysis and healthcare. 

The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences contains a complementary range of Schools spanning the science and technology spectrum, including Chemistry, Electronics and Computer Science, Engineering, Physics and Astronomy and the Zepler Institute for Photonics and Nanoelectronics, together with the research-led Web-Science Institute and the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute. The strong synergy between these disciplines within a single faculty helps to strengthen and accelerate research, including work focusing on material chemistries. 

UK National Crystallography Service

The University of Southampton houses the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) X‑ray crystallography service, a national centre which provides data collection and crystal structure analysis for the UK chemistry community.

Southampton Chemistry Analytical Solutions

Additionally, a wide variety of analytical skills are available via the Southampton Chemistry Analytical Solutions (SCAS). Formed in 2010, SCAS combines modern analytical instrumentation with expert knowledge to provide comprehensive analytical solutions to the external commercial and industrial community.

Southampton is at the forefront of developments in the synthesis of diverse classes of inorganic, organic (including expertise in organofluorine chemistry), solid-state and supramolecular compounds, materials and assemblies, as well as having a world-leading reputation in electrochemistry and its applications. This includes research in continuous flow synthesis using photo- and electrochemistry. 

On-site access to fabrication within clean rooms provides a direct route to the synthesis, analysis and assessment of new materials and devices.

Expertise in computational methods not only provides a detailed understanding of material properties over a range of length scales, but also new developments in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning in chemistry

The Magnetic Resonance group develops new approaches in NMR including the use of micro-fluidic devices, the generation of long lived signals for use in imaging, and the study of solid state NMR with applications to superconductors and materials, with special attention to catalysis.

Within chemical biology, diagnostic and therapeutics, there is activity in enzyme structure, the alleviation of antibiotic resistance, the control of peptide-peptide interactions and bio-spectroscopy within living cells.
